What part of your life do you water with your words?

When someone asks you about your day, what is the first thing you call to mind? A complaint? Or a positive?

What do you play when you talk about your day? Do you replay the problems or do you replay the positives?

If you have two plants and only water one — that one will grow. The other will eventually die. Whatever you water, grows.

The same goes with what we think about in relation to our day. Every single day has problems of the day. Every single day (well perhaps most of them) have positives of the day as well.

I’ll admit, when Kip and I would sit down to talk about our days, I used to talk about the problems first. But then, rarely, would I get to the positives. No more. Now, I try my best to recount the truly awesome things that happen each and every day and then run out of time and we don’t have time to discuss anything negative.

While some problem need discussing, some problems grow because they are discussed. We’re watering the wrong thing.

I intentionally seek to tell myself five positive things about each day on the way home from work. Then, when I get home, I find myself happier and remembering the joys of my profession, not the challenges and pitfalls.

What part of your life do you water with your words? Do you grow gratitude or dissatisfaction? Do you grow friendships or fault-finding? Do you grow joy or anger?

Choose your words wisely for eventually they choose you.

This post is day 62 of 80 days of excellence. I’ve created an email list below for those of you want to be emailed the full posts written as part of this series.
