The ISTE Mainstage event today had several great takeaways relating to AI, creativity, Game based Learning, and more. Here are the things I learned from this event.

If you dig into the awesome Zhoriel Tapo student reporter, you’ll see that although she is twelve, if you dig into her story, she had a speech go viral that she gave about leadership when she was six. She did a great job interviewing Tarzan Davis from this summer’s Maverick Top Gun movie.

Taryn Southern was another amazing presenter, also a popular YouTuber focusing on AI creation.
I teach digital film and continue to tell students and parents that if America were being formed today that our founding fathers wouldn’t print pamphlets, they would make YouTube videos.
I believe knowing how to make videos is an essential part of every school’s curriculum. In addition to writing MLA papers, students need to be making short videos on topics of interest to them.

AI
is a powerful tool for creativity
Taryn shared some AI tools like Google’s AI sound creator, Nsynth. And as backchannel chats often do, I learned about two other AI resource pages from @SarahEJudd from #AI4All:

I think Taryn’s journey in creativity is as important as anything she shared. She shared her music video composed with AI – she write the lyrics and vocal melodies.
Lauren also shared her AI clone that she has created and is demonstrated in this video. We have discussed the deep fake in class but in this case, she’s basically “deep faked” her self and it is used with permission. This will be the technology that has John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe and other long-dead superstars starting in movies again. It will happen.

ISTE Mentioned their free AI curriculum but it was the endorsement in the chat that had me take a look at the AI material from ISTE.

Project Based Learning
is Important
As the students took the stage, I’m reminded. They talk about projects, games, and also being treated with respect.
I personally believe that since the pandemic, it is more vital than ever to have great genius projects. (Read Using Genius Hour Projects to Help Students Find Meaning that I wrote for Edutopia.)
